Welcome, my name is Phil, and in this video I discuss what Grand Design spiral galaxies are.

Spiral galaxies generally have a disc like structure with spiral arms, high gas content and star formation when compared with elliptical galaxies. Grand design galaxies have prominent spiral arms that extend from the central region to the outer parts of a galaxy. The arms are complete with no clear breaks in them. Other types of spiral galaxies, like Flocculent galaxies are more patchy and do not have complete spiral arms.

Another key feature for Grand Design spiral galaxies is that most of the star formation occurs in the spiral arms due to density waves. As gas moves into spiral arms, it is compressed, which forms new stars. As a result star formation can be seen to occur in the spiral arms of Grand Design spiral galaxies.
