How to sew an easy, no elastic, Face Mask. Fabric ties. Assembly line friendly.

UPDATE: Written PDF download available here: https://penguinandfish.com/facemask

The mask I'm making tonight has fabric ties instead of elastic, and it has a pocket on the back for an extra filter.

Materials:
Front fabric: Qty 1 - 9" x 6" rectangle
Back fabric: Qty 1 - 9" x 6" rectangle, Qty 1 - 9" x 9" square (I'm using plain fabric for the back because I had a ton of it at home, but you could make yours with a pretty fabric.)
Ties: Qty 2 - 36" x 2" strips. (If you have bias tape, that works too)
Pins/wonder clips: You'll also need a few pins and even better, some wonder clips.

About the mask:
I've adapted this mask design from a few places. One design is from the "Laura Richards Vick" FB post I shared on my Penguin & Fish facebook page. She's a surgeon who is making and testing masks. Her and her coworkers like the ties versus elastic because it is more adjustable. And...I don't have any elastic at home (and I know a lot of you don't either), so ties it is.

My husband asked his aunt (a nurse at our hospital) if she would like a pocket on the back or no pocket. She thought a pocket would be good, so we've added a pocket. The pocket can be used to put in a real mask that they want to protect, or a different sort of filter could be placed inside as needed.

I chose this design out of all the ones out there right now for the two wants above from the surgeon and nurse, and for the speed and easiness that these masks can be made. We are making 50+ on the request of Jon's aunt for her nursing staff, and we're hoping we can make all 50 in one or two days.

What the masks will be used for:
There's a lot going around on how this mask won't do anything for covid-19 or it's not up to the standard of the N95 masks. Although these masks can be used on the outside of N95 masks to help protect them more, our DIY masks will most likely to be used in all other areas of the hospital. Jon's aunt said that she and the other nurses get NO MASKS AT ALL from the hospital. All the masks go to the covid-19 areas of the hospital. They use them once. They put a mask on when they see a covid-19 patient, and then they get thrown out. All N95 mask supplies go to this, leaving the rest of the hospital with nothing. Our DIY masks will most likely fill that gap. DIY masks have shown to be 50% effective against covid-19 sized particles, not to mention larger particles. And 50% is better than nothing!!! Jon and I are getting the 50 masks for his aunt done ASAP because they need them NOW!
