Carlo Domeniconi: Koyunbaba (First recording 1985)
Koyunbaba is the most famous guitar piece of the great Italian composer and classical guitarist Carlo Domeniconi (born in Cesena, Italy - February 20, 1947), the word comes from the name of a man who was a saint who lived in the city of Osmancık in Çorum Province, Turkey in the 15th century. Koyunbaba (whose epithet means "sheep father") was a shepherd in Bursa in northwestern Turkey, his descendants who still reside in the area.
Musically, apart from the amazing and translucent beauty, one could notice the Turkish influence, where the guitar tuning is original, in C# or E min:
E C# G# C# G# C#.
An important feature of his music is the constant search for new viewpoints and a continual exploration of the guitar. The music is tailor-made for the instrument, idiomatic.
"The time of the self-deprecating ‘classical’ guitar is over. It is time to see the guitar as it really is: a strong, sonorous instrument with a richness of colour that knows no equal." (Carlo Domeniconi)
