Microsoft founder and American billionaire Bill Gates decided to donate almost his entire fortune to a philanthropic foundation that he established with his now ex-wife Melinda Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The billionaire wrote this on Twitter.

"I plan to contribute almost all of my fortune to the foundation. I will keep moving lower and eventually leave the list of the richest people in the world," Gates noted.

The Microsoft founder stressed that the world suffered several terrible shocks over the past few years, including a coronavirus pandemic and a war in Ukraine, which "have left many people despondent and wondering whether the world is destined to get worse."

"But I' m still optimistic," Gates admitted, adding that he believes "it is possible to soften the damage and return to the progress the world has been making."

In 2000, Gates and his wife founded a foundation that gave $6 billion a year to charities. But "the great crises of our time demand more from all of us," Gates added that the foundation will now donate $9 billion annually.
