2001 Millville 125cc Moto 1 (Travis Pastrana's LAST 125cc Moto)
This is the first 125cc moto from the 2001 Spring Creek Motocross National from Millville, MN.
In 2001, Team Suzuki's Travis Pastrana was having a National season that went from a dream to a nightmare in a matter of 3 races. Travis had won 2 overalls in the first 6 races of the season and had built a 44-point lead over Red Bull KTM's Grant Langston. However, Travis had been dropping like a rock in the series since the 2nd moto at Unadilla when he crashed on the final lap, sustaining a concussion; he ended up 22nd in the moto (after winning moto 1) for 6th overall (1-22). He lost 22 points from the 2nd moto DNF to Langston, who won the 2nd moto and the overall with a 2-1 -- his 3rd overall win of the season.
At the next round at Kenworthy's, Travis had a decent day for 8th overall (5-10) losing only 4 points to Langston; however, Langston had a sour day with a 4-8 for 6th overall. Travis' and Grant's results allowed another contender to challenge for the title: Pro Circuit Kawasaki's Mike Brown. Brown, who won the Budds Creek race with a 1-1 sweep, won Kenworthy's with another 1-1 sweep. At that point, Pastrana was ahead by 18 points; he had lost 26 points in 2 races already.
At the last round in Washougal, Brown won yet again with a 1-1 sweep -- his 4th straight moto win, 7 for the season. Langston finished with a 2-3 for 2nd overall, but Travis' bad luck streak continued once again. A crash in moto 1 caused him to come from near last to finish in 8th, reducing his points lead to 7 over Langston and 11 over Brown. Towards the end of the moto, Travis was pressuring Moto XXX Yamaha's Larry Ward for 2nd place before crashing and dropping from 3rd to 4th; he crashed again several turns later and whacked his head again to go along with his concussion from Unadilla. Mike Brown inherited the points lead by 5 over Langston and 16 over Pastrana, and erased a 59-point deficit with only 1/2 the series to go.
Travis tried to carry on into this first moto at Millville as a pursuer, but conditioning proved to be his nemesis. Injuries and bad crashes had haunted him through the 2nd half of the Motocross season. Despite winning another X Games gold medal in Freestyle (against Suzuki's wishes), Travis eventually ended his 125cc Motocross season and his 125cc career altogether in this exact moto. Despite Travis missing the final 7 motos of the season, he still ended up 6th overall in the final points tally with 311 points.
Earlier in the season, Travis was named part of the 2001 MX des Nations team in Belgium along with Team Kawasaki's Ricky Carmichael and Team Honda's Ryan Hughes. He later withdrew due to fear of more injuries; ironically, Ryan Hughes also withdrew due to 2 concussions -- one before Washougal and the other at the final round at Steel City. The team was later replaced by Mike Brown and Travis' Team Suzuki teammate Kevin Windham; however, due to the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, Team USA later withdrew from the MX des Nations.
With Travis Pastrana out after this moto, the battle went on between 2 old GP rivals in Grant Langston and Mike Brown. The title later went to Mike Brown at Steel City after Grant Langston's rear wheel broke towards the end of the final moto. At the same time, Brown's riding partner, Team Kawasaki's Ricky Carmichael, won the overall with a 3-1 to Brown's 1-3, which gave Ricky 125cc MX career win #26 -- surpassing the great Mark Barnett for the all-time 125cc MX career win record, which Barnett had set in just 3 years (1980-82). Carmichael's record would stand until 2004 when James Stewart won 28 races (out of 31) from 2002-2004.
Enjoy.
