LAND ROVER DEFENDER EIGHT KINGDOMS ROUTE STAGE 2-RUTA DE LOS OCHO REINOS ETAPA 2

This weekend we decided to do the stage 2 of a long track that we found in wikiloc. It's called the Eight Kingdoms Route because it goes through 8 areas: some are countries and some are Autonomous Communities. The Eight Kingdoms are:
1. ANDORRA 2. CATALUNYA 3. ARAGÓN 4. NAVARRA 5. FRANCE 6. BASQUE COUNTRY
7. CANTABRIA 8. ASTURIAS.

There is a long piece of tarmac before it really starts the 4x4 track in this route, so what we did is: we recorded the track right from the place where 4x4 starts, which is on the fantastic valley where the video starts, where you can visit the waterfall called "Sauth den Pish" (it means
"The Fall of the Pee" in the local dialect of the Vall d'Aran (aranès). The coordinates are: 42º46'37.6''N Oº50'00.6''E. There is a little lake which looks like a wide river, it's the Lake of Varradòs. The track we recorded follows this stage but at some point (as we very often do) we decided to leave it and explore a trail that climbed up and up: This trail goes to the Montoliu Lake (Estanh de Montoliu) and also to the Pica Palomera Lake (Estanh de Pica Palomera). If you want to go to Montoliu Lake you will have to leave the car in the trail and walk for 1 hour and 20 minutes. If you want to go to the Pica Palomera Lake, at some point you will also have to park the car in the trail because there is a chain or barrier that blocks the dirt road. After exploring this trail we went back donw and continued following the original track of the Eight Kingdoms Route, stage 2.
This stage is a spectacular track that crosses the Valley of Aran, goes past the ski station Baqueira Beret and finally enters the Montgarri Forest. It's full of rivers and creeks all the way. The branch off that we explored is a must if you like wild desolate trails. It's not difficult in terms of 4x4.

Este fin de semana decidimos hacer la etapa 2 de una larga ruta que encontramos en wikiloc. Se llama la Ruta de los Ocho Reinos porque pasa por 8 zonas: algunas son países y otras son Comunidades Autónomas. Los Ocho Reinos son:
1. ANDORRA 2. CATALUNYA 3. ARAGÓN 4. NAVARRA 5. FRANCIA 6. PAÍS VASCO 7. CANTABRIA 8. ASTURIAS.

Hay una largo trozo de carretera antes de que empiece realmente la pista de 4x4, así que lo que hicimos es lo siguiente: grabamos en el GPS la ruta justo desde que empieza la pista de 4x4, donde está el fantástico valle donde empieza el vídeo, donde podéis ver la la catarata que se llama en aranés (dialecto local) "Sauth den Pish", que significa "El Salto del Pis". Las coordenadas son: 42º46'37.6''N Oº50'00.6''E. Hay un pequeño lago que parece un río ancho, es el Lago de Varradòs. La pista que grabamos sigue esta etapa hasta cierto punto en que (como solemos hacer), la abandonamos para explorar una variante que sube y sube en una pista de que lleva, primero cerca del Lago Montoliu (Estanh de Montoliu) y luego sigue hasta el Lago Pica Palomera (Estanh de Pica Palomera). Si queréis ir al Lago Montoliu tendréis que dejar el coche en la misma pista y caminar 1 hora y 20 minutos. Si queréis ir al Lago Pica Palomera también tendréis que dejar el coche en la pista porque en cierto punto hay una cadena o barrera que bloquea la pista. Después de explorar esta pista alternativa bajamos otra vez y continuamos la pista de los Ocho Reinos etapa 2.
Esta etapa es una pista espectacular que cruza todo el Valle de Arán, pasa por las pistas de esquí de Baqueira Beret y finalmente entra en los bosques de Montgarri. Está llena de ríos y riachuelos. La alternativa variante que exploramos es sencillamente obligatoria si os gustan las pistas y lugares agrestes y solitarios. No es dificil en cuanto al 4x4.
