📘 How Switchport Modes Work? | Access vs Trunk vs Dynamic (CCNA Explained)
In this video, we explain how switchport modes work using a clean, visual infographic designed for CCNA students and networking beginners. Switchport modes define how a switch port handles VLAN traffic, and understanding them is essential for real-world networking and exams.
🔵 Access Mode
Access mode is used for end devices like PCs, printers, and IP phones.
• Belongs to one VLAN only
• Traffic is untagged
• Common in user access ports
Example: A PC connected to VLAN 10
🟠 Trunk Mode
Trunk mode is used to carry multiple VLANs over a single link.
• Supports multiple VLANs
• Uses 802.1Q VLAN tagging
• Common between switch-to-switch or switch-to-router links
Example: VLANs 10, 20, and 30 traveling between switches
🟢 Dynamic Auto
Dynamic Auto is a passive negotiation mode.
• Uses DTP (Dynamic Trunking Protocol)
• Becomes a trunk only if the other side requests it
• If both sides are Dynamic Auto → stays Access mode
⚠️ Mostly seen in legacy networks
🟣 Dynamic Desirable
Dynamic Desirable actively tries to form a trunk.
• Sends DTP messages
• Becomes trunk if the neighbor agrees
• More aggressive than Dynamic Auto
⚠️ Not recommended for secure modern networks
🔐 Best Practice (CCNA Tip)
Avoid dynamic modes in production networks.
✔ Manually configure:
• switchport mode access for end devices
• switchport mode trunk for switch links
This prevents unexpected trunking and security risks.
