If I should Fall Behind 26th Anniversary
September 20, 2012
26 years ago today I married my best friend and the girl who would become the mother of my daughter and my partner on this crazy ride called life. I don't have a lot of money and I ain't much for looks, so it must be love.
I told this story last year but I will tell it on every wedding anniversary from now on.
Only 4 months into our marriage we were given the news that my vision would slowly deteriorate and I should expect to be blind by the age of 40. Needless to say this was a shock to both of us. I had just enlisted in the Air Force and we had dreams of seeing the world and making the AF a career. When the dust settled and the news sank in, Paula took me by the hand and repeated the vows "For better or worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health." It is not exactly the life we planned on in the beginning but we have been very blessed and it has been a great 26 years with or without 20/20 vision.
For the past 15 years or so, I have taken my wife's arm or shoulder when we are out somewhere that is crowded or unfamiliar stepping. With limited vision it helps me to stay oriented as to where I am. As you all know by my posts here on FB. I am a huge Bruce Springsteen fan. In 1992 he put out a CD called Lucky Town. The CD was not that commercially successful, but of course I got it the day it came out. As we listened to the song "If I should Fall Behind" and as we have listened to it over the years, it almost seems like he wrote the song for us. From the very first verse... "We said we'd walk together, baby come what may." "That come the twilight (blindness) should we lose our way." "If as we're walking, a hand should slip free, I'll wait for you, and should I fall behind wait for me." This is our song and will always be our song. Happy Anniversary Paula Medina. This video is for you.
