Situated in the southwestern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, Yemen is sometimes referred to as the ‘Wild West of the Arab World.’ Mountains, tribes, drugs, a sectarian divide and foreign meddling have come together into the toxic cocktail of civil war. Houthi rebels, armed with an impressive arsenal of rockets and with Iranian backing face off against the Yemeni army propped up by a Saudi-led coalition who are in turn supported by several Western powers. At the same time, an armed group fights for the secession of Southern Yemen while Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula further muddies the water, fighting against all other factions present. Humanitarian organisations are warning that Yemen is facing the ‘world’s worst humanitarian crisis.’ So how did it come to this? This is History of Today: The Yemeni Civil War.
