Oscar De La Hoya vs Hector Camacho 13.9.1997 - WBC World Welterweight Championship

The 1997 WBC World Welterweight title match between champion, Oscar De La Hoya, and challenger, Hector Camacho. Oscar De La Hoya was in the absolute prime of his career and would put on a boxing clinic against the 17 year veteran. More details below...

Oscar De Lay Hoya came to world wide attention in 1992 when he won a gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics. He turned pro very soon after and won the WBO World Super Featherweight title in 1994. Just 4 months later, he would move up in weight and won the WBO World Lightweight title. In 1996 he moved up in weight again, and beat one of the best lightweight boxers of all time, Julio Cesar Chavez, to win the WBC World Super Lightweight title. Less than a year later, and a couple pounds heavier, Oscar would beat another ring legend, Pernell Whitaker, to claim the WBC World Welterweight title. He had carved a path of 25 straight victories with no losses. He was one of the hottest properties in boxing at the time and he had the speed and power to match with anyone.

Hector Camacho had been around since 1980 and had racked up an impressive 63-3-1 record. He had moved up weight categories just like De La Hoya had and was also a multi-time champion. In 1983 he won the WBC World Super Featherweight title, in 1985 the WBC World Lightweight title, in 1989 the WBO World Super Lightweight title, in 1995 the IBC Welterweight title and in 1996 the IBC Middleweight title. He had fought and beaten such boxers as Rafael Limon, Jose Luis Ramirez, Freddie Roach, Edwin Rosario, Cornelius Boza-Edwards, Ray Mancini, Vinny Pazienza, Greg Haugen, Roberto Duran and most recently Sugar Ray Leonard, effectively ending Sugar Ray's career. He was a fast and slick southpaw with a flamboyant personality and was yet to be stopped in 67 fights. His 3 losses came at the hands of Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Greg Haugen in a rematch, all of whom were very respected boxers.

From the opening bell through to the end of the 12th round, the fight was all De La Hoya. In round 9 Camacho hit the deck from a flurry of punches and in round 12 was deducted a point for continuous holding. Camacho was game, but Del La Hoya was in far better condition and it showed. It was arguably the best performance of De La Hoya's career as he landed over twice as many punches as his opponent with an impressive 50% accuracy!

Following this victory De La Hoya would defend his welterweight belt another 5 times before losing it to Felix Trinidad by mixed decision. He would go on to win world titles in the super welterweight and middleweight divisions and come the closest person to beating Floyd Mayweather Jr before he retired in 2008 after losing to Manny Pacquiao. Oscar De La Hoya's professional record stands at 39-6. Hector Camacho would retire in 2010 following a rematch with Roberto Duran in 2001 and winning the WBF International Super Welterweight title in 2008. His final record was 79-6-3 and he holds the distinction of never being stopped in 88 fights...
