Coronavirus: Separate households banned from meeting indoors in parts of northern England | ITV News

The health secretary Matt Hancock has announced major new restrictions for parts of northern England.

From midnight tonight, people in Greater Manchester, parts of West Yorkshire and East Lancashire who live in different households will be banned from meeting indoors.

The dramatic decision follows a rise in coronavirus cases in the region.

Mr Hancock said the change to the restrictions was the result of people meeting up and not sticking to social distancing rules.

It was a decision, he said, taken with a heavy heart, but one that the government believes is necessary to protect the country from a second wave of the virus.
