Stamped (For Kids) Chapter 7: "Words Matter"
During the early to mid 1800's, there were many Black and White people fighting to abolish slavery and spread these ideas through mass communication including William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, and Sojourner Truth. The chapter discusses their writings and activism while also shedding light on some abolitionists' assimilationist views, especially the widely popular "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Unfortunately, as these views became more widespread so did the views of those who opposed it, even leading some "scientists" to use their "evidence" to backup racist viewpoints about Black people.
