TSH and Thyroid Function Tests | UCLA Endocrine Center
It’s normal for doctors to order blood tests to check thyroid health, says endocrinologist Yaroslav Gofnung, MD. A common test checks thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Originating from the pituitary gland, TSH tells your body to make the thyroid hormone.
If a test shows your TSH value is too high, it usually indicates hypothyroidism. This means the body isn’t producing enough of the thyroid hormone or you’re taking too little thyroid hormone medication. On the other hand, a low TSH value often indicates hyperthyroidism — when the body produces too much thyroid hormone.
A normal TSH value usually means the thyroid is functioning as it should.
Talk to your health care provider or endocrinologist when reviewing your thyroid tests. For more information about tests and treatment, explore the UCLA Health Endocrine Center: https://www.uclahealth.org/medical-services/surgery/endocrine-surgery
