🐍✨ Medusa: Ancient Greece | Art History | Mythology | Gorgoneion

I’ve been exploring the raw energy of ancient Greek art, specifically the Archaic period. My latest wood engraving—in terracotta, white, and black—was inspired by the legendary work of the potter Ergotimos and painter Kleitias (c. 570 BCE).

Medusa is a visual paradox. In ancient art, she wasn’t just a monster; she was a gorgoneion, an apotropaic symbol used to ward off evil. Whether depicted as a fanged, bearded beast or a hauntingly beautiful maiden, her piercing, frontal gaze is unmistakable. Unlike most figures in Greek art who interact in profile, she stares directly at you.

From Hesiod’s myths of her Gorgon sisters to Ovid’s tragic tale of her transformation, she represents the "other"—a dangerous force the Greeks felt compelled to harness. By placing her image on shields, armor, and even drinking vessels, they turned a terrifying threat into a powerful protective charm.

It’s a reminder that even the most feared things can be transformed into tools of protection—if you’re brave enough to look at them, even through a reflection. 🛡️👁️
