“We only know the world as it is evoked by light.” - Louis Kahn, architect

It’s true. We only see objects when our eyes see the light reflecting from them. Light shapes depth, emotion, mood, and attention. It impacts how we experience spaces and people.

As a former photographer, this is one of those lessons I learned behind the camera before I ever taught in front of one.

It’s fascinating that light changes how we experience ourselves on camera too.

Good lighting helps people see your eyes, expressions, and energy.

Good framing helps your audience focus on your message instead of visual distractions.

A few small adjustments can make a huge difference:
• face a window or soft light source

• avoid harsh overhead lighting

• frame yourself around eye level (your camera lens should sit at your eye level)

• leave a little breathing room above your head but not too much

Camera confidence is part psychology, part practical but it starts with seeing and shaping the light.
