Best snorkeling in the world (2020)

Our Best Travel Destinations for Snorkeling

We fully expect and hope that this list isn’t exhaustive, but we are really excited to share our favorite destinationsthe best snorkeling in the world so far! We have included destinations from the Galapagos Islands, the Philippines, Panama and Egypt. Our travel choices are heavily biased towards places with th best snorkeling spots as it’s our favorite thing to do, so all of these destinations are places with world class snorkeling. We also prefer places with great off shore snorkeling, that allows us to explore the area by ourselves without the restrictions of taking boat trips with big groups. So that’s said, here are our best snorkeing spots (so far!).

Probably our top choice for overall mind boggling nature variety is Galapagos Islands. This place is very difficult to beat for a nature lover, it really has everything and doesn’t have to be crazy expensive, which is what most people seem to expect. In a future post we will include a detailed description of our itinerary as planning a trip here that doesn’t break the bank was not so straight forward, but it was definitely worth it!

We really were overwhelmed by the richness of the wildlife in the Galapagos islands, the best parts are in the sea, but they really would knock your socks off! You can enter the sea from pretty much any of the 4 inhabited islands (Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, Isabela, and Floreana) and be blown away by enormous ancient green turtles, super playful sea lions and the odd passing reef shark or eagle ray. The remaining uninhabited islands (there are 9) are very strictly controlled and can only be visited with a naturalist guide, which is absolutely as it should be. We visited almost all but the most remote islands and were met by the pristine wildlife on each one.

Egypt was our most recent and surprising trip, and this is probably our top pick for easy access to great snorkeling. We went there with hope of seeing the elusive dugong, which we did, plus so much more! We have a more detailed review of this trip in another video, please check it out. To summarize, dugongs, dolphins, and turtles (both green and hawksbill!), beautiful coral and we were only there for a relatively short trip!

The Philippines is our top choice for beautiful coral, cast away beaches and stunning views. We had so many great experiences here and in addition to beautiful landscapes it boasts its fair share of cool animals one the land and in the sea. Our main aim in the Philippines was to see whale sharks, we decided to forego a trip to Oslob, which is where alot of whalesharks are seen, because of concerns about inethical feeding of the whalesharks which is interferring with their natural feeding and breeding cycle. Instead we started our trip in Donsol, which is regulated by an excellent whale shark protection program and we delighted to see 4 whale sharks! These guys had been firmly at the top of our bucket list for a while so it was glorious to finally meet one, it was also one of our most exhilarating trips. We were straining our eyes to see one in the distance and swam over in the slightly murky water, to suddenly see one the size of a double decker bus almost barge into us! You cant get much more exciting than that! In the Philippines we were also lucky to see many turtles in brilliant visibility in Apo Island and Balicasag and even spotted the super endangered and super cute Tarsier in Bohol.

Panama is a destination super close to our heart as we went there for our honeymoon. Its probably our favorite destination for overall happy travel vibe, mixed with pockets of truly wild locations. In Panama we got our first good look at Humpback whales from a boat in Pedasi, this is was super exciting as at one point we were on a tiny boat with Humpbacks coming up for air all around us. There was a great variety of accessible nature in Panama, there is jungle with lazy sloths sleeping in the trees, right next to world class snorkeling in the Coiba Marine park which is teaming with reef sharks and Hawksbill turtles. Despite all of this, our real highlight was staying in a jungle lodge called Howlers bay, where a family of Racoons broke into our room at night and rummaged through our clothes (admittedly they may have been encouraged by the trail of crackers we left at the door). If you want a nature holiday with a party vibe, Panama is the place for you!
