In this brief video "Benzodiazepines Vs Barbiturates" Dr. Najeeb highlights the major differences between Benzodiazepines and Barbiturates. Benzodiazepines are generally considered safer than Barbiturates even though both the drugs act on the same GABA receptors. Although they act on the same receptor, there are certain differences in their mechanism of action resulting in differences in opening and closing frequencies and duration of opening and closing of the GABA receptors, causing a slightly enhanced effect with Barbiturates which are thus considered less safe.
