Ubuntu MATE’s Future Uncertain? Founder Steps Back After 12 Years

Ubuntu MATE’s founder Martin Wimpress has announced that he is stepping back from leading the project after more than 12 years of work. This major development also explains why Ubuntu MATE will not release a 26.04 LTS version.

Ubuntu MATE started in 2014 as a combination of Ubuntu and the classic MATE desktop environment, which was originally based on the old GNOME 2 desktop. The distribution quickly became popular among users who prefer a traditional Linux desktop experience.

Many Ubuntu flavors rely heavily on volunteers, and maintaining a distribution involves testing, bug fixing, security updates, documentation, and community management. With fewer contributors available, projects like Ubuntu MATE, Lubuntu, and Ubuntu Unity are facing new challenges.

But this may not be the end of Ubuntu MATE — it could simply be the start of a new chapter if new contributors step forward.
