12. Plankton
Known more commonly as sea sparkle, Noctiluca scintillans is a type of single-celled marine-dwelling plankton that is found worldwide in cold and warm waters, often along coastlines, in estuaries, and along well-lit, shallow portions of the continental shelf. They can make beaches glow!!

11. Bobtail Squid
Bobtail squid, or sepiolids, also known as “dumping squid” or “stubby squid,” are a group of cuttlefish-like cephalopods that are found in parts of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. They favor shallow coastal waters and most are about as big as a human thumb, or about two inches (5 cm) long.

10. Mytoxia Millipedes
Did you know that there were millipedes that glow in the dark?? Those things are already kind of creepy with all those legs, but now if you’re walking around at night you can see them coming. However, as far as we know only eight out of 12,000 known millipede species are known to glow in the dark. They’re all blind, and they all belong to the Mytoxia genus found in three counties in the U.S. state of California.

9. Lanternfish
“Lanternfish” (Symbolophorus barnardi) is the name for roughly 200 species of deepwater fish who are so named because they look like a lantern, they are so bright! Lanternfish have organs called photophores on their head, underside, and tail, which are responsible for the chemical reaction resulting in bioluminescence. They use this trait for both attracting prey and to signal to other specimens for mating purposes.

8. Glow-Worms
The term “glow-worm” is often used to refer to firefly larvae, but it is a term that is used for many small worm/beetle-like creatures that glow in the dark. This might not sound that amazing, but one of the most magical places on Earth has to be the Waitomo Glowworm Caves in New Zealand! This place looks amazing, it is a dark cave lit up with what looks like stars, but it is actually the glow worm known as (Arachnocampa Luminosa) which is unique to New Zealand.

7. Deep Sea Anglerfish
There are around 200 different anglerfish species, but the deep sea anglerfish (Ceratias hobolli) is arguably one of the scariest, most terrifying looking sea creatures out there. It lives at depths of up to 3,280 feet (1,000 meters) below the ocean’s surface, where light from above cannot reach.

6. Comb Jellies
Ctenophores, or comb jellies, are a phylum of carnivorous invertebrate marine creatures that are found worldwide. Many comb jellies are bioluminescent. They move via the synchronous beating of their eight long rows of cilia, which scatter the light and glow in a dazzling rainbow.

5. Fireflies
You might have even seen fireflies glowing on a summer night, but you may be surprised to learn that even their larvae glow. Underneath their abdomens, they possess organs that create light. When a firefly inhales oxygen, it combines with luciferin, a substance inside special cells, to create the signature blinking glow.

4. Latia Neritoides
Found in the streams and rivers of New Zealand’s North Island, Latia neritoides is the only known bioluminescent freshwater gastropod. These tiny marine snails have a shell measuring just 0.4 inches (11 mm) long or less, up to 0.31 inches (8 mm) wide, and only 0.18 inches (4.5 mm) tall. Other than their ability to light up, they are rather bland in appearance, and look much like an ordinary snail, sporting a dull, brown hue.

3. Krill
Krill are tiny crustaceans that somewhat resemble shrimp, measuring up to 2.4 inches (6 cm) long, and while their diminutive size may make them seem unimportant, they play a significant role in the health of the world’s oceans and their ecosystems. This is what whales eat!

2. Quantula Striata
Quantula striata is the only species in its genus, Quantula, and is also the only known bioluminescent terrestrial gastropod, aka snail! Specimens reach between two and 2.4 inches (5-6 cm) long, and have long tentacles and large eye spots. This species can be found in Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, the Philippines, and parts of Indonesia’s Riau Archipelago, and is most often seen after it rains.

1. Cookiecutter Shark
Also called the cigar shark, the cookiecutter shark (Isistius brasiliensis) is a small, parasitic species that dwells in warm oceanic waters throughout the world, especially favoring habitats near islands.
