RUDY WISSLER and SCOTTY BECKETT ~ "THE JOLSON STORY" 1946
Viewers not familiar with Al Jolson might be wondering who Rudy Wissler was not to mention Scotty Beckett; both seen here in excerpts from the beginning of the award winning musical biography of Al Jolson's life, "The Jolson Story".
Actually, Wissler was the 'uncredited' tenor voice singing the songs that actor Scotty Beckett mouthed the words to in the film, while portraying Jolson as a kid rising up in the world of show business. We also get a good glimpse of Jolson's sidekick, manager and adviser Steve Martin (played by William Demarest) in the film. Jolson devotees have always enjoyed the wonderful singing that Mr. Wissler did for the film although he in no way had a monumental career outside of this movie. Scotty Beckett, on the other hand, will be remembered for his roles in "The Little Rascals" short subjects and his excellent portrayal here as the young Jolson.
The Jolson Story was nominated for 4 Academy Awards in 1946, winning 2 (Best Music Scoring of a Musical Picture and Best Sound, Recording ) as well as a nomination for Larry Parks as best actor. The Jolson Story is still considered by many as the best musical biography ever made.
PS. The whistling was, of course, dubbed by Jolson himself.
