39th Fighter Squadron, 35th Fighter Group, 5th American Air Force, Gusap, New Guinea 1944

Parts of this interview of Lew were used in the documentary film "Injury Slight, Please Advise", about Capt. O'Sullivan, who crashed his P-38 in the jungle and hiked out despite a run in with headhunter natives. His P-38 "Marlee 2" is still sitting on the ground in the jungle today on protected reservation land:

At one time Lew bailed out of a sketchy P-39 he was joyriding in to parachute to the Australian outback, and was picked up by a cattle rancher.

At another time his bomb overloaded P-47 belly tank skidded on the Marsden Matting on takeoff, blew up, threw him clear of the plane, and was presumed dead from burning wreckage by this flight forming up above.

When returning from the mission, they found him waiting for them sitting atop a jeep grinning.

Lew left the military after WW2 and worked for the rest of his life as a chemist for Mead Paper Corporation, making the ruled loose leaf paper you used as a kid in school (among other things).

He passed away 2017 in Franklin, TN and is buried at Williamson Memorial Gardens there.

p.s. He was a hit with his grandchildren for making the best spagetti sauce ever. His secret was to run the chunky vegetables through a blender. He never once mentioned WW2 to them or ever talked about the war.
