GEOGRAPHY FOR UPSC | ALFRED WEGENER'S CONTINENTAL DRIFT THEORY | WITH NOTES MAKING | UPSC CSE |
Welcome to our dedicated Geography session for UPSC CSE! In this video, we break down Alfred Wegener’s Continental Drift Theory (1912)—a foundational topic for both Prelims (Physical Geography) and Mains (GS Paper 1 & Geography Optional).
Grab your notebook! This video is structured explicitly for active note-taking, mapping out the core concepts, criticisms, and modern relevance exactly how you should write them in your actual exam
Quick Revision Notes (Copy & Save)
1. The Core Concept
Proposed by Alfred Wegener in 1912 to explain the global distribution of oceans and continents.
Supercontinent: Pangea (All Earth) surrounded by a mega-ocean called Panthalassa (All Water).
The Split: Around 200 million years ago (Carboniferous period), Pangea broke into Laurasia (Northern landmass) and Gondwanaland (Southern landmass).
2. The 4 Fatal Evidences
The Jig-Saw Fit: Remarkable matching of the shorelines of South America and Africa (Bullard’s Fit).
Rocks of Same Age across Oceans: The belt of ancient rocks (2,000 million years old) from Brazil matches the West African coast.
Tillite (Sedimentary Rock from Glaciers): Gondwana system sediments found in six disconnected landmasses (India, Africa, Falkland, Australia, Antarctica, Madagascar).
Placer Deposits: Rich gold veins found in Ghana (West Africa) but no source rock nearby; the source rocks are located across the ocean in Brazil.
Fossil Distribution: Remains of Mesosaurus (small reptile) and Glossopteris (fern fern) found only in South Africa and South America.
3. The Rejection (The Weak Link)
Wegener proposed two forces that mainstream science rejected as too weak to move continents:
Pole-fleeing Force: Relating to the rotation of the Earth (centrifugal force).
Tidal Force: Due to the gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon.
