Political & Security Dynamics in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea Region
"A Fraying Seam of World Order: Political & Security Dynamics in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea Region," January 18, 2018.
This panel discussion explored the rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape in the Horn of Africa, including the cross-cutting political and security dynamics among the states of the Horn, the Arabian Gulf and the broader Red Sea region.
Understanding of these developments is often obscured by the institutional divisions in government and the policy community between the Middle East and East Africa. The discussion aimed to bridge this divide and to identify opportunities for constructive U.S. diplomatic engagement in a challenging environment where the United States has a number of core interests.
Speakers:
Abdeta Beyene, Executive Director, Centre for Dialogue, Research and Cooperation
Michael Wahid Hanna, Senior Fellow, The Century Foundation
Annette Weber, Senior Fellow, German Institute for International and Security Affairs
Payton Knopf, Advisor, U.S. Institute of Peace
Princeton Lyman, Senior Advisor to the President, U.S. Institute of Peace
Abdul Mohammed, Chief of Staff, AU High Level Implementation Panel

The United States Institute of Peace is an independent national institute, founded by Congress and dedicated to the proposition that a world without violent conflict is possible, practical, and essential for U.S. and global security. USIP pursues this vision on the ground in conflict zones, working with local partners to prevent conflicts from turning to bloodshed and to end it when they do. The Institute provides training, analysis, and other resources to people, organizations, and governments working to build peace.
