Northern Trains Class 331 number 331009 Civity Express built by CAF in Zaragoza, Spain, 331009 entered service in 2019 as part of Northern’s "transformational" new fleet. Based on the Civity platform, this three-car electric multiple unit (EMU) was designed to replace aging legacy stock like the Class 319 and 321, offering a massive leap in passenger comfort and acceleration.The unit is powered by a 25kV AC overhead electric system, delivering a total power output of approximately 2,360 hp. A standout technical feature is its exceptional acceleration rate making it one of the quickest-starting EMUs in the UK. This allows 331009 to reach its top speed of 100 mph rapidly, significantly improving journey times on commuter routes with frequent stops.Currently operated by Northern Trains, 331009 carries the standard blue and white digital livery. The interior is a modern standard for 2026, featuring air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, power sockets at every seat, and open gangways for better passenger flow. It also includes modern accessibility features, such as a universal access toilet and dedicated wheelchair spaces.Based at Allerton TMD in Liverpool, 331009 is a frequent sight on electrified routes across the North West, including services between Manchester, Liverpool, and Blackpool. As of 2026, it remains a flagship of Northern’s fleet, proving that the move toward high-performance, Spanish-built electric traction was the right step for the region’s suburban network.
