Soul Blade (1995) is a port of the 1996 arcade hit Soul Edge to the Sony PlayStation. It is the first entry in the Soul Calibur series of fighting games.
Created by Namco, the game offers similar quality action to the Tekken series. However, a key difference is that all the characters use weapons, more akin to the Toshinden Series and Last Bronx. The game also takes place in a 16th century fantasy setting, with fighting styles inspired by historical arts. For example, the character roster includes a samurai and a ninja warrior.
Soul Blade offers some unique and interesting throwing techniques, since the moves take into account the weapon and fighting style of each character. Many of the grab moves are based on melee attacks, but there is still a fair amount of conventional throwing techniques.
Some characters can perform a throw or grab move as part of their 'Critical Edge' special combo attack. A few fighters have the ability to counter certain striking attacks with a grab move. There are also a couple of situational moves like a running throw (Li Long) and ground throw (Rock).
The grab moves are largely unique for each fighter, but Mitsurugi shares a front and back throw with Hwang. The unlockable characters Seong Han-myeong and Soul Edge re-use throws from Hwang and Cervantes respectively.
An interesting feature of this game is that each character can perform different throws should they lose their weapon during a bout. Male characters all use the same body slam from the front, whereas female characters all use a Tomoe Nage. Every character has a back drop as their unarmed rear throw. While it would have been nice to see unarmed throws that were bespoke to each character, the animations we got are still very good.
Thanks for checking out All Throws. Be sure to subscribe for more grappling goodness.
