One of the biggest mistakes in public health research is assuming that association means causation.

If two things happen together, it almost feels like one caused the other. That instinct has wrecked more public health policy than you would believe.

Coffee drinkers report more stress. Does coffee cause stress? Or do stressed people drink more coffee? Or does a third factor, like long work hours, drive both?

Association is the clue. Causation is the conclusion you have to earn.

Save this if you are studying epidemiology.
