Pakistan is facing a diplomatic crisis as the surge of "professional beggars" travelling abroad tarnishes its international standing. According to Pakistani authorities, Saudi Arabia alone has deported 24,000 Pakistani nationals this year for begging, while thousands more have been sent back from the UAE and Azerbaijan. In response, Islamabad has launched a massive domestic intervention. Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) offloaded over 66,000 passengers at airports in 2025 to dismantle these organised begging rackets. Despite passing new legislation to criminalise organised begging and suspending thousands of passports this year, the government struggles to contain the begging crisis.
