The repetition ranges given in this video are for most cases. Please be aware that with individual cases, different repetition and set ranges may be required. A health expert should be able to advise you with this. If you find the exercises are aggravating your symptoms, stop doing the exercise(s) and consult your GP for further help/guidance.

Before doing these exercises, it is always a good idea to see your chiropractor, physiotherapist or medical doctor. This is to help attain a working diagnosis for the cause of your pain/sciatica.

If you have sciatica you tend to have shooting, stabbing, burning pain. You can also have feeling of numbness, weakness or tingling (pins and needles). All of these symptoms can occur around your buttocks, backs of your legs and your feet/toes.

There are many different causes of sciatica. Most people think sciatica is a diagnosis when in fact sciatica is actually a symptom. Sciatica typically occurs when you have an irritation to the nerves in your lower back.

Sometimes sciatica can be caused by a herniated “slipped” disc. This is when the disc (soft tissue cushion between the bones in your spine) pushes out of it’s normal position. The outside of the disc is made out of rings of cartilage with a fluid like substance in the middle. When the fluid is pushed to the outside of the disc this can cause it to herniate (push out), this may cause irritation around the local area, especially to the nerves that are associated with that level with your spine.

To assist with the diagnosis imaging of the lumbar spine (lower back) may be required such as x-ray or MRI. This will be determined if it is appropriate or not by the health professional in charge of your case.

According to the NHS website, sciatica usually lasts 4-6 weeks but can go on for longer. They suggest seeing your GP if the pain hasn’t improved after several weeks, getting worse or the pain is stopping you performing your everyday activities.

*** SERIOUS NOTE ***
Please be aware of signs and symptoms that mean you need to be seen by a medical professional as soon as possible.

• Weakness/numbness both legs that is severe or getting worse
• Numbness around your genitals and or anus.
• Find it hard to start peeing, can’t pee or control when you pee, especially if this is not
normal for you.
• When you are not aware of needing to defecate (poo) or can’t control when you need

Good luck with the exercises.
