🧬 Peptide Bond Formation | Biology by Pinki
A peptide bond is a special covalent bond formed between two amino acids. It is created when the amino group (-NH₂) of one amino acid reacts with the carboxyl group (-COOH) of another amino acid. During this reaction, one molecule of water (H₂O) is released, so it is called a condensation or dehydration reaction.
The peptide bond links amino acids together to form peptides and proteins. Proteins are essential biomolecules that perform numerous functions in living organisms, including enzyme activity, transport, growth, repair, and immune defense.
Key Points: ✅ Peptide bond = -CO-NH- linkage
✅ Formed between amino acids
✅ Water molecule is released during formation
✅ Also called a dehydration synthesis reaction
✅ Responsible for the primary structure of proteins
Reaction: Amino Acid 1 + Amino Acid 2 → Dipeptide + H₂O
📚 Interesting Fact: Thousands of amino acids can join through peptide bonds to form long polypeptide chains, which fold into functional proteins.
