🛑 Officer Involved Shooting 📸 Vehicle On My Livestream Prior To Incident

Approximately around 2:30am BPD was involved in an Officer involved shooting in the area of Chester & 13th street. The suspect fired at the police and apparently had a rifle. Gun fire was exchanged between the suspect and police. The truck had multiple bullet holes in the front windshield no officers were injured in the shootout the suspect was deceased inside of the truck. The bearCat was called out to assist and clear the vehicle. BPD is currently on scene handling the investigation.

For Immediate Release January 18, 2024
On January 18th, 2024, at approximately 2:24 AM, the Bakersfield Police Department
received a ShotSpotter activation for one round fired in the 1300 block of Chester
Avenue. Officers responded and encountered an armed suspect in a vehicle. The
suspect fired at officers and an officer involved shooting occurred.
A witness notified officers the suspect had been in possession of an object that appeared
to be a grenade or explosive device.
Due to the suspect being armed and the possibility of an explosive device, officers
requested additional resources including the Bakersfield Police Department Bomb
Squad and an armored vehicle. The Kern County Sheriff’s Department assisted the
investigation by providing two armored vehicles. Officers used a robot and drone to
ensure the scene was safe before approaching the suspect vehicle.
The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. The name of the decedent will be
released by the Kern County Coroner’s Office.
Due to the ongoing investigation, Chester Avenue between California Avenue and
Truxtun Avenue is expected to be closed for several hours.
The officers were equipped with body worn cameras and footage will be released as the
investigation allows.
