The territory of Castro was inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by the settlement of Montenero, now abandoned but dating back to ancient times, which appears to be surrounded by a large circle of walls, or placed by cutting without the use of mortar.

It is a settlement built by the population of the *Volsci*, enemies and friends of Rome during different years, and consolidated with the destruction of the Roman cities of the area: Fregellae and Fabrateria.

In Roman times some rustic villas were built along the ancient road. One of the villas is part of a large spa, near a sulfur spring. The necropolis of a Germanic population was also discovered, a singular fact that can provide information on an almost completely unknown period in Lazio history.

After the year 1000, Castro's strategic position meant that the village became the property of the papal state.
In 1165 Castro was conquered by the troops of Federico Barbarossa.
In the mid-14th century Castro was organized into a rural municipality, and in the 15th century the community was governed by a statute, issued by the Colonna.

During the 18th century, the peaceful Castrese community recorded a demographic increase and, in 1795, agrarian reforms were prepared.
In the Napoleonic era, the presence of a large pro-papal movement favored the birth of brigandage. Castro became, in fact, one of the epicenters of the phenomenon: the gangs of criminals nestled in the safe triangle Castro-Sonnino-Vallecorsa, on the border of the papal state.
Banditry reappeared around 1825, and after 1870, with the presence of pro-Bourbon bands.

The increase of the population led to a strong deforestation to create land suitable for cultivation. Failing, for various reasons, this objective, the people sought remedy in emigration, especially in France. Therefore in the first decades of the 20th century, and especially after the Second World War, the historic center of Castrese depopulated, while the surrounding rural areas experienced a demographic increase due to immigration from other areas.

The Second World War was a tragic period for Castro dei Volsci: in the period preceding the liberation, which occurred on May 27, 1944, there were roundups, deportations and executions; bombing, thefts, torture and violence of the North African troops of the French army. After peace, Castro dei Volsci started the reconstruction of the town despite many difficulties.
