You can learn to identify rocks and minerals, and the skill of mineral identification is one well worth learning. The basic characteristics of minerals include: crystal shape, Hardness, luster, Chemistry, density, cleavage and color. Each one of these characteristics is an indicator of what the mineral is. Buy a book that will list the various characteristics and help you identify minerals. My prospecting book has a little of this, but there are mineral guides that focus on the topic. It’s not just about color: a lot of people focus on it because its so easy to see. But many minerals come in multiple shades and colors. Don't send me pictures, watch these videos and learn to identify minerals for yourself. This video is part 1 of a 3 part series.
