Soprano : "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming", "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen", is a 16th century Christmas carol of German origin with harmonization written by German composer Michael Praetorius in 1609. The tree of Jesse is often depicted as a rose plant. As a Christmas carol, Mary learns she is to be the mother of Jesus and is compared to a mystical rose. The hymn is thought to have originated in Trier, where on one Christmas Eve, a monk found a blooming rose while walking in the woods and placed it on an alter to the Virgin Mary.
