Las Meninas by Velazquez Short 3

This is a short of a longer video. This video explores the painting Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez, a major Baroque masterpiece, and a masterpiece of the Spanish Golden Age. Velazquez was the court painter of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal. The painting depicts a room in the Royal Alcazar of Madrid. The main figure and focal point of the painting is the Infanta Margarita Teresa, at five years old. She is surrounded by two maids of honor, or Las Meninas, Dona Isabel de Velasco, and Dona Maria Augustina Sarmiento de Sotomayor. To the right of the infanta are two dwarves, the German Mari Barbola, and the Italian, Nicolas Pertusato. Velazquez himself is painting at an easel. In the mirror, we see a reflection of King Philip IV and Queen Mariana. Their reflection is where the viewer would be looking at the painting.
