Making progress isn't always fun but that's okay.
Only the moment when progress is visible it seems fun... but what about the rest of this thing called progression?
Having skated for more than 8 years has been a lot about making progression. I have always said that making progression is fun but if you really think about it, progression isn’t always fun. The moment the progress is visible is the moment it all pays off. But ofcourse there is this cliché known as “the journey is the destination.” That’s what I wanted to focus on in this video. Ofcourse with a little bit of skateboarding to back it up. It’s the skateboard bruh channel after all. In skateboarding this “journey” is known as practicing a trick. Since we love skateboarding this is fun most of the time. Not always though. Making progression, practicing, can be a real pain. You get hurt, you get scared, you eat sh*t, you might eat a banana and move on. That’s where the backwards law comes in. It might be a bit weird combining a famous writer like Alan watts with skateboarding but his law is actually quite applicable to it if you think about it. This law was popularized by writer Mark Manson. This law basically means “The desire for more positive experience is itself a negative experience. And, paradoxically, the acceptance of one’s negative experience is itself a positive experience.”
Pretty deep but if you watch the vid you’ll understand. This is still just the description of a youtube skateboarding vid so don’t expect life changing stuff in here. I’m currently trying to make a bit better skateboarding videos with a story. To add some extra info to the people that take the time to read these descriptions; One of my favorite (the internet’s favorite) psychologist Jordan Peterson, he had a cool addition to this law. And that is that happiness isn’t always something we should strive for. If you get mad, scared or angry for not landing a trick that’s okay. Happiness is nice but it isn’t always the right mood to be in while learning a trick. I mean if you eat shit and you get hurt while doing a trick it’s simply wrong to be happy. Staying positive and determined is definitely something you should try when learning a trick but not necessarily happy. There is something beautiful about eating shit too you know.
I know this is all in relation to life but you know skateboarding is life…
Thank you all for all the support!
