Insights 2 - Shri K N Raghu - Part 1 of 4

To his innumerable fans, it was no secret that Madurai Mani Iyer was a Gandharva, a celestial being; such was the mesmerizing beauty of his music. On 23rd August 1947, the two Gandharvas, Lalgudi and Madurai Mani Iyer first performed on stage. Needless to say, their partnership lasted over hundreds of concerts and produced music meant for the Gods!
In this episode of Insights, we are presenting excerpts from a four hour plus concert of the two Gandharvas wherein percussion support has been provided by T K Murthy. This is the first of a four part presentation of some of the items in the concert.
To explain to us the nuances and unique features of the concert, we are fortunate to have Shri K N Raghu as our guide. Shri Raghu describes himself as a ‘manaseeka sishya’ of the maestro, Lalgudi. He had his initial training in Carnatic vocal and violin under Nagarcoil Sri J Samraj at the age of 11 before coming under the tutelage of Sri Lalgudi Gopala Iyer himself! Shri Raghu was just 16 years old then and has been under the spell of the Lalgudi Bhani ever since.
He has composed about 10 keertanas (including kritis in rare ragas like Malavi, Niroshta, Deepali and KanaKangi) 6 thillanas and a varnam Sindhubhairavi. Two of his kirtanas in Malavi and Varali were rendered on stage by Vidushis Smt Ranjani & Smt Gayatri in their concerts during the 2018 December Music festival.
We are thankful to Shri Raghu for sparing his time for the Lalgudi Fans channel. We are hopeful of more of his inputs in the future….
