The History of the Toyota 2000GT - Japan's Most Expensive Classic

In the 1960s, Toyota released a car that would change the Japanese motor industry forever. The Toyota 2000GT was like nothing that had ever come out of the country before and it showed the world that the Japanese motor industry meant business.

Toyota began developing the 2000GT soon after the 1964 Japanese Grand Prix. They enlisted the help of Yamaha, who had already begun development of a prototype sports car for Nissan. Nissan rejected the prototype and went on to create their own sports car, the 240Z.

Toyota and Yamaha worked together and in 1965 they unveiled the 280A1 prototype. The sleek prototype impressed attendees at the 1965 Tokyo Motor Show, but buyers would have to wait two years before they could get their hands on the 2000GT.

Production carried on for three years and Toyota produced a total of 351 cars. The 2000GT was made famous when it appeared in the James Bond film “You Only Live Twice”.

Today, the Toyota 2000GT is the most expensive Japanese classic car you can buy, with examples fetching well over $1,000,000.
