Compilation of D'arcy Wretzky Playing Bass Amazingly

DISCLAIMER: I love every original member of the Smashing Pumpkins. This is in no way a slight against B. Corgan or anyone else who was in the band. Whether or not you play bass yourself and can play the parts is hilariously irrelevant. I've seen that comment at least four to five times already. Doesn't take away from how good she was. She was in a highly influential rock band and you were not. Show respect where respect is due.

D'arcy Wretzky is the original bassist of The Smashing Pumpkins. She was with the group from 1988-1999. For those who don't know, D'Arcy did not perform the bass tracks on 1991's "Gish" or on 1993's "Siamese Dream." She did, however, perform bass on 1995's "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" and 1998's "Adore." She played bass live at every gig with the band from 1988-1998, and some shows in 1999.

This video is a compilation of audio clips from live shows, primarily 1993's Record Release Party Show in Chicago and 1996's performance at Brixton Academy in London. Not all of these clips are professional quality, so you will have to listen to the best of your ability for her playing. Not every clip is an isolated bass moment; several are mixed in with the rest of the band playing. There has been much debate in the last twenty years, and even during her time with the band, about D'arcy's musicianship level or skills. If you listen to these clips or watch the live videos linked in the description box below, and you still think she can't play, you're not listening for the right things.

Good bass players aren't just there to steal the show with busy lines and flashy tricks. D'arcy manages to pull some of that out here and there, which goes largely unnoticed. Still, what's even more unaccounted for is her beautifully restrained playing in many songs. I am aware that Billy Corgan wrote and recorded most of the Smashing Pumpkins' material, especially during the 1988-1993 era (sans Jimmy Chamberlain's drumming). However, I do believe that the other members' energies were part of the reason their music sounded the way it did up until 1999. Billy has said himself that he thought of the way the band sounded live when he was writing songs in the studio. He has also stated he wrote some of the best songs he's even written while James and D'arcy were in the studio with him (this is a quote from an Adore-era interview in 1998). Regardless, many bands have a primary songwriter and musician. When the Pumpkins brought it live, all four members were integral.

I DO NOT OWN ANY OF THE AUDIO IN THIS VIDEO.
