Our Rich Journey – In one of my final years living in the United States, my friend was tragically killed while trying to protect his daughter. The perpetrator, his own son-in-law, arrived at his house and shot my friend before entering the home, shooting his daughter, and ultimately taking his own life. At the time of this horrific incident, there were children present in the house. In the blink of an eye, my friend's life was taken from him. I visited him in the hospital, witnessing his struggle as he ultimately succumbed to the gunshot wound to his head.

Sadly, this was not the only time I lost a friend to gun violence. A recent study revealed that 58 percent of American adults, or someone they care about, have experienced gun violence in their lifetime. I suspect the actual figure may be even higher.

As a father, knowing that guns are the leading cause of death for children in the United States, it deeply concerns me to think about raising my own children in such an environment. This concern is one of the reasons we decided to move abroad. We discovered that many other Americans share our sentiments and have chosen to leave the US because they no longer feel safe. Recently, we met a family who moved to Portugal after their daughter experienced a mass shooting at her high school.

The difference in safety between Portugal and the US is striking. Portugal is ranked as the 6th safest country in the world, while the US lags behind at 129th place out of 163 countries. One significant factor contributing to this disparity is the prevailing gun culture.

In this YouTube video, I delve into the reasons behind these stark differences, with the hope of shedding light on this critical issue and offering some valuable perspective to those considering a similar move.
