Elizabeth Diane Downs was born on August 7, 1955, and had a traumatic childhood. At the age of 14, she dropped her first name in order to go by the name Diane Downs. In 1973, Diane married Steve Downs, and their first child, Christie, was born a year later in 1974. Their daughter, Cheryl, followed in 1976, with Stephen Daniel being born in 1979. The couple divorced in 1980. 3 years later, Downs fatally shot her daughter and attempted to do so with her other two children in 1983, which some attribute to be due to the fact that her new love interest said that he was uninterested in being a father to children. Following the crimes, she told multiple different versions of a story to the police about how a man had attempted to carjack her and had shot the children. She was convicted in 1984 and sentenced to life in prison plus fifty years. In 1987, Downs escaped for a short time but was found and re-imprisoned. She was denied parole in December 2008 and again in December 2010. Her next hearing is to be set for some time in 2021.
