Heavy snowfall began to impact the Black Hills and surrounding area on Sunday as the strongest winter storm (Winter Storm Xylia) plowed across the Mount Rushmore State of South Dakota. Plows worked around the clock to keep Black Hills highways passable as the same storm responsible for shutting down Interstate routes moved into the region. The snowfall was so heavy that Mount Rushmore National Memorial remained obscured even when viewed from up close. The town of Custer, SD had already received over half a foot of snow bu Sunday afternoon, with over two feet of accumulation expected in the area. A blizzard warning was issued for the area, and travel-related impacts are expected across the Rapid City area as nearly a foot of snow is expected to begin accumulating through the evening.
