How Bad Actors Used Bad Science to Label 'Desirable' & 'Undesirable' Immigrants | Video 83

This video dives into how immigrants in the late 1800s were labeled as "desirable" or "undesirable" and why those labels had less to do with fairness and more to do with race, power, and political control.

American politicians and elites did not just want any immigrants; they wanted specific kinds of immigrants. Those from Northern Europe were often seen as people who could help preserve what they called "the American way of life." Meanwhile, immigrants from Asia, Southern Europe, and Eastern Europe were not preferred in American society. The fear was not just about labor, but also about citizenship and voting power.

To justify these exclusions, supporters of white supremacy turned to distorted versions of science. We'll talk about:
- Social Darwinism: How Herbert Spencer twisted Charles Darwin's ideas into the phrase "survival of the fittest" to argue that wealthy and powerful people deserved their status, while struggling groups deserved to fail.
- Eugenics: A movement that promoted the idea that society should be "improved" through selective breeding and that immigrants from certain regions were biologically inferior.

We will look at how these ideas shaped immigration policy and helped create laws designed to keep America "pure," meaning White and politically controlled by elites. These theories were not real science. They were tools used to justify discrimination, exclusion, and inequality. Understanding this history helps us recognize how fear and false beliefs shaped immigration laws. This topic also challenges us to think about how harmful it is when people claim others deserve to struggle, fail, or be excluded simply because of who they are or where they come from.
