CAD 101 – Inventor – Basic Part Modeling – Building the Base Profile - – Part 2 of 3
Welcome back to CAD 101 – INVENTOR.

In this video we continue building our mechanical part in Autodesk Inventor by taking a 2D engineering drawing and turning it into a fully constrained 3D model.
This lesson focuses on creating the base sketch that defines the shape of the part before turning it into a 3D feature. We analyze the multiview drawing, choose the correct sketch plane, build the overall profile geometry, and then extrude the sketch into a solid part.
In this video, we focus on:
Fully constrained sketches
Using the origin in sketches
Reading a multiview engineering drawing
Building base profile geometry
Chamfer tool
Fillet tool
Trim tool
Dimensioning geometry
Extrude command workflow
Basic part modeling workflow
Students will create the base shape of the part by sketching the front profile, applying dimensions and constraints, adding the hole, and extruding the part to the proper depth.
This lesson reinforces one of the most important CAD habits: do not rush to the 3D feature until the sketch is fully constrained and stable.
⚠️ Important Modeling Concept
In CAD we do not guess shapes.
Parts should always be created using the dimensions provided in the engineering drawing so that the model is accurate and fully defined.
