A sudden twist of the knee in the wrong direction can have serious consequences for athletes, often ending in a torn meniscus.

Each person has 2 menisci within their knee joint, one on the outer (lateral) and one on the inner (medial) edge. The menisci help keep the knee steady and balance weight evenly across the knee, and also act as a cushion between the top of the tibia bone and the bottom of the femur where they meet to form the knee joint.

Athletes will want to meet with a physician who can ask a series of questions about how the injury occurred in order to properly diagnose. The doctor will perform a series of exercises to test stability, tenderness, and range of motion in the knee, as well as perform x-rays or an MRI if necessary to determine the severity of the tear.
