The HR Model: Strategy and Planning

Human Resource Management is about the formal systems designed to manage people in an organization. It is made up of eight functional areas of human resource work.

Let’s explore strategy and planning. Human resource strategy and planning identifies and manages current and future needs to achieve organizational goals. Some of the activities of strategy and planning include organizational development, human resource planning, technology and job documentation.

Organizational Development
Organizational development is a planned effort, managed by leadership and supported by employees, to increase employee engagement and organization effectiveness through planned change in processes and systems.

Understanding your organization’s values is the starting point for Human Resource Management. These values inform each functional are of human resource management.

Executed successfully, organizational development maximize employees’ potential and aligns their behavior with organizational strategy.

Human Resource Planning
Human resource planning is a process that identifies current and future needs for an organization to achieve its goals. It serves as a link between HR and organizational strategy. Human resource planning includes figuring out:
1. Where you are: understanding the current reality
2. Where you want to go: identifying the vision for the future
3. How to get there: bringing the plan to reality through measurable action

Planning is critical for each functional area of human resource management. Doing so will ensure you develop the right human resource strategy, goals and action items to realize your plan.

Human Resource Technology
Put simply, human resource technology helps to keep track of your employees and information about them. A Human Resources Information System is a software solution that is used for data entry, data tracking and the data management of an organization's people.

Human Resource Information systems help organizations efficiently and effectively complete administrative and operational tasks to focus time and energy on linking human resource strategy with organizational mission and the work of people in the organization.

Job Documentation
Job documentation provides the foundation for all HR activities covered in this toolkit as well as the foundation for the compliance function. We create job documentation through a process called job analysis.

Job Analysis is the systematic process of collecting information that identifies similarities and differences in work. The outcome is job documentation. A variety of methods that can be used to collect information jobs. The most common are observation, interviewing, questionnaires, and online.
