The death of 24-year-old Deepika Nagar from Greater Noida has become one of India’s most shocking cases, drawing comparisons to the recent Twisha Sharma case. In both cases, young women died soon after marriage, while families alleged dowry harassment and abuse.
Deepika married Ritik Nagar in December 2024 in a lavish wedding. Her family says they gave cash, jewellery, expensive gifts, and a Scorpio vehicle as dowry. After marriage, Deepika allegedly faced repeated harassment for ₹50 lakh and a Toyota Fortuner SUV.
Her family admitted they often told her to “adjust” and save the marriage — a detail that triggered strong reactions online, with many questioning why women are still expected to silently tolerate abuse.
On 17 May 2026, Deepika’s family received a call saying she had fallen from the terrace of her in-laws’ house in Greater Noida. Her in-laws reportedly claimed it was suicide.
But her family alleged she was brutally assaulted and then thrown from the third floor to make it look like suicide.
The post-mortem findings shocked the country. Doctors reportedly found severe internal injuries, including a blood clot in the brain, ruptured organs, heavy internal bleeding, and multiple injuries across her body. Some wounds were described as “bone-deep.”
The findings raised serious questions online, with many wondering whether she had been beaten before the fall.
Police have not officially declared it murder yet, and the investigation is ongoing. Husband Ritik Nagar and father-in-law Manoj Nagar have been arrested, while some other accused family members are reportedly absconding.
The case also sparked reactions from celebrities. Kangana Ranaut spoke about abusive marriages and women’s financial independence, while Khushboo Patani questioned the societal pressure around marriage.
The Deepika Nagar case has once again reignited conversations around dowry harassment, abusive marriages, and the pressure on women to remain silent.
