Why Did Rome Fall? (And What If It Didn't)

Since the Crisis of the Third Century, the Western Roman Empire had been in a steady decline. Facing plagues, invasions, economic crisis, moral decay, and more, it was just a matter of time before the Great Empire of the West collapsed under its own weight, but in those last decades of Rome's existence, a number of men did emerge who sought to put Rome back on track, and restore imperial might. These men among the greatest of the late Empire's soldiers, generals, and emperors: Flavius Valentinian, Flavius Stilicho, Flavius Aetius (there is no such thing as coincidences), and Julius Valerius Majorian. Of course in our world, they didn't, but what if things were different? What if in an alternate timeline the West Roman Empire survived? More importantly, how could western Rome have survived? And why did Rome fall in the first place?
