How to maintain your Busch R5 Model Rotary Vain Vacuum Pump:

Proper Maintenance Procedures (Sample Pump-REO 630 Model):

* Oil Change; start pump and let it warm up completely to operating temperature (15 mins). Shut down pump and lock out. Set up container to capture used oil, pull drain plug on the side of the exhaust box and drain completely. Go to other side of pump and rotate manually to push excess oil into exhaust box. After all oil is drained, place a 1 gallon container below the oil filter, remove oil filter and let drain completely. If there is heavy contamination of the oil, remove both exhaust box covers and remove oil pad and vacuum screen, and sheet metal baffle. Manually scrape any residual oil and contaminates from bottom of exhaust box, final wipe with a clean cloth. Re-install sheet metal baffle, vacuum screen and oil pad, replace exhaust covers. Remove site glass, clean lens and replace gasket and re-install. Replace drain plug, lubricate oil ring on new oil filter and install new oil filter. Refill pump until site glass is 1/2 to 3/4 full. Run pump to completely charge system and refill back to 1/2 to 3/4 as site glass.

* Coupling - ensure adequate play.

* Filter kit, exhaust filter replacement. Filters last 12 to 18 months. 9 psi is maximum back pressure on filter. When indicator reaches red, the filters should be replaced. Remove exhaust filter cover. Remove all exhaust filter retainer clips and remove all filters. Remove drum plug, lubricate O ring on exhaust filters with high vacuum grease.

Begin installing filters 1 at a time starting in lower left corner and working to the upper right hand corner. Inspect each filter installtion through the drum plug with a flash light.

Replace baffle strainer and reinstall cover with new gasket.

In instances of heavy contamination of oil, the oil return box may be removed and cleaned.

Using compressed air or water, clean vacuum radiator.
