In 2014, brave hound Hurricane protected President Obama and his family from a potential attacker. He and handler, Officer Marshall Mirarchi, were on duty that night and were able to thwart a serious security breach.

Hurricane has been awarded the PDSA Order of Merit – the animal equivalent to the OBE. He was recognised for his devotion and bravery and joins other service animals to have been awarded the honour.

PDSA treats over 48,000 pets in need every year and we work hard to raise the profile of animals through our awards programme and encourage responsible ownership through our work in the community.
