Melanin is a naturally produced pigment that exists in all skin. Your level/amount of melanin determines your skin color. Melanocytes are the cells that produce melanin.Everyone has the same number of melanocytes.Melanocytes are programmed to produce certain type and amounts of melanin.
Too much melanin production causes dark spots and hyperpigmentation.Which is why Hyperpigmentation is the MOST COMMON SKINCARE concern in soc GLOBABLLY (STATES, AFRICA, ASIA, etc ).
Sun UV rays, pollutants, burns, skin inflammation and irritations over stimulate the enzyme tyrosinase resulting in an excess of melanin to the skin surface. That excess of melanin creates dark spots & hyperpigmentation, melasma, PIH.
Skin tone(lighter skin vs darker skin is determined by the amount and organization of melanin within the melanosomes and Keratinocytes. The quality and quantity of melanin produced rather than the number of melanocytes.
